Video: Claire Affleck Rides in Hobbit Hollow Hunter Derby

This past weekend was the Summer in Skaneateles Horse Show hosted by Hobbit Hollow.

The final event on Saturday’s schedule was the first annual Hunter Derby.  Hunter Derby’s take place on a hilly grass field (rather than a sand riding arena), and have more natural obstacles and complicated courses, off set jumps, trot jumps and even jumps that you have to gallop!   Hunter Derby’s have two rounds.  The first round is a course of 12 jumps.  After you perform your round you are given a score.  Those with the top scores are called back for a second round.  The second round is shorter, 9 jumps, and has very tricky turns.  I was to be able to participate in this event on a friend’s horse, Step ‘N Fetch It.  This was my first time doing a hunter derby and I was so excited! The course was very hard, but very fun!  My first round went pretty well, and I got called back to do a second round.  The second round had very hard turns, a trot jump, and a gallop jump. I did a much better job on my second course!  What fun it was! I ended up placing 6th out of 14 entries.  After they awarded us our ribbons we paraded onto the field and did a victory gallop around the hunt field.  It was a great evening and I’m looking forward to preparing for this event again next year!
