Last week all six members of the LocalHarvest team gathered in Santa Cruz for our biannual meeting-of-the-minds. So much fun. But those meetings get long and the minds get tired. Just when we were starting to flag one afternoon, Kerry brought out a plate of dragon fruit. Much oohing and aahing ensued. Sliced in half, these magenta-skinned, cream-centered fruit were truly the prettiest fruit I have ever seen. And delicious, too — one person described it as kind of like a kiwi but without the tang. The flavor lent itself to a more creative description too…
“It’s like eating the color!” Angel said.
“What?!”
“The flavor…it tastes pink! Magenta, just like the skin!”
Dragon fruit has a short season, and it’s upon us. If you like tropical fruit, this is one to try.
Speaking of beautiful things, LocalHarvest farmers are curing their garlic, and some are offering it as braids. I think freshly harvested garlic is one of the most beautiful crops, and a braid is both pretty and functional.
If you’re looking ahead to a fall garden, now is a good time to order seeds — including seed garlic. This time next year you could be braiding your own!
From dragon fruit to seed garlic — LocalHarvest farmers have it all!
Until next time, take good care and eat well.
