Kim McGraw: Birches An exhibit of mixed media collages

Baltimore Woods Nature Center is pleased to present Birches, an exhibit and sale of mixed media collage by Syracuse artist Kim McGraw. On exhibit from July 2nd through August 31st 2012 in the Weeks Art Gallery, 4007 Bishop Hill Road, Marcellus, NY this collection of work is open to the public during regular business hours: M-F 9am-4pm and Saturday 10am-4pm. There is no admission charge to the gallery, and parking is free.

McGraw has a unique interpretation of her subject matter, birch trees. An art professor once told her: “if you’re having trouble coming up with an idea, think about something that interests you, research it and from there ideas will come.” This is what McGraw did. Having always been attracted to birch trees, she found that simply drawing and painting them was not ultimately satisfying. Doing some research into birches revealed that birch bark was used in times past as a writing surface. This led to the idea of using newsprint in her mixed media collages to represent the birches. “ Birch bark always reminded me of newspaper due to its white background and randomly scattered black markings,” she writes.

After fifteen years of exploring her birch tree “obsession” using this working methodology,  McGraw states: “My trees have evolved over the last few years, taking the viewer from a dark linear forest to a variety of viewpoints, seasons and times of day. These are not landscape paintings — they are mixed media collages about the trees and my relationship with them.”

McGraw was awarded her BFA and MSAE from The Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, MA. She has exhibited her work both in Massachusetts and the greater Syracuse, NY area. A permanent exhibit of her work is on display at Anyela’s Vineyard in Skaneateles, NY, The artist currently teaches art at Solvay High School and resides in Syracuse, NY with her husband and son.
