Video: Dad, My Hero and a Veteran

Dr. Rob’s mother and father share a few thoughts and words on this Veteran’s Day.
Transcription:
Dr Rob: What date was that dad?
Dad: January 17th, 1943
Dr. Rob: And what happened then
Dad: I went across the street to 1126 75th street
Mom: and we met and he had me laughing and laughing
Dad: and I met Mr. and Mrs. Barillas daughter
Dr. Rob: uh huh… How was that mom
Mom: That was good, because I enjoyed laughing
Dr. Rob: Dad likes to laugh, doesn’t hey
Mom: Oh yes!
Dr. Rob: And tomorrow is Veterans Day
Dad: Veterans’ day that is correct
Dad: I was in the service
Dr. Rob: what age where you
Dad: I am a world war 2 combat veteran. And I went in at 17
Dr. Rob: How many years were you in the service
Dad: I was in a little over three years
Dr. Rob: And where did you serve
Dad: I served on the USS Long Island and aircraft carrier. I went into the south pacific below the equator and then uh, came back got off that ship and got on a sink plane tender and from there uh, I retraced most of the that I had uh while I was on the air craft carrier and then some more, went into Syband and Wetacksomberan Majuro, went into truck, went up into Okinawa.
Dr. Rob: Was it a good experience?
Dad: It was a very, very, uh different experience I was still in high school.
Dr. Rob: How did it effect your life?
Dad: Well, now and then you have little set backs but mostly I go forward with them.
Dr. Rob: Do you have any good memories?
Dad: All good memories
Dr. Rob: And you know what is really great is when you share those stories. And I always love hearing your stories that you share of the war and your experience because they’re stories that are so important in life. And as a veteran you must rely on yourself. I can tell you that the stories you share, I am proud of you.
Dad: Thank you
Dr. Rob: And thank you for being a veteran and thank you for being there to support our country and I love you.
Dad: I love you too. And I love you sweetheart.
Mom: I love you ( shared a kiss). Thank you for being a veteran.
