The Alchemical Nursery Trash Project
February 27, 2009 by Jenny Skates
February 19, 2009 will mark the one year anniversary of The Alchemical Nursery Project founder Elizabeth Slate’s crazy project to save her trash and stop putting it to the curb – recyclables included.
What got Liz to declare “I pledge to not send one thing to the incinerator/land fill/what have you”?
Last winter on Feb. 19, 2008, while walking past the Rose Garden in Thornden Park, Liz noticed a number of plastic bags stuck on the rose bushes. When she went to pick them up she noticed other bits of garbage: broken plastic cups and packaging, styrofoam, McD’s fry containers, assorted papers and paper towels, a couple beer cans, a plastic water bottle, a cardboard box, even a bunch of partially deflated balloons. It didn’t look pretty.
But the thing that bothered Liz most of all was that although it may have looked bad, it exposed the reality of a throw-away culture where the not so pretty garbage is typically carted away – out of sight and out of mind.
It got Liz to thinking about the subject of waste: where it comes from, where it goes, and how to approach a zero waste ideal as an individual. This contemplation resulted in her decision later that day to begin her project. Read more
Stand tall without standing on someone

You can stand tall without standing on someone. You can be a victor without having victims. –Harriet Woods
A Rare Act of Sportsmanship:
“The coach never considered any other option. No matter that his high school basketball team had ridden a bus two and a half hours to get to Milwaukee, then waited another hour past game time to play. Didn’t matter that the game was close, or that this was a chance to beat a big city team. Something else was on Dave Rohlman’s mind when he asked for a volunteer to shoot two free throws awarded his team on a technical foul in the second quarter. His senior captain raised his hand, ready to go to the line as he had many times before. Only this time it was different.”You realize you’re going to miss them, don’t you?” Rohlman said.” So begins this heartwarming real-life story of a team that demonstrated how some things in life are more important than winning. Todd and Kaylie
February 26, 2009 by Dr. Rob
Dear Dr. Kiltz and staff, We want to thank you so much for
your compassion and understanding throughout the IVF process. Our twins
arrived about two weeks early. Todd was 5 lb., 5 oz., and 18″ long, while
Kaylie was 5 lb., 10 oz., and 19″ long. However, Todd passed her after a
couple of weeks and is now more than a pound heavier than his sister.
Thanks again for all you’ve done for us. God bless you.
P.S. Thanks for the bouquet of flowers. It was beautiful and very unexpected
Our First Family Vacation
February 26, 2009 by Dr. Rob

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that a person could love something so much until my beautiful twins where delivered and placed in my arms on October 4th 2007. I will never forget that very day. My husband and I loaded our suitcase filled with everything we thought we needed for our trip to the hospital into our SUV, pulled out of the driveway, and stopped in front of our house to take one last look. We cried in excitement that the next time we saw this house we would be bringing home our family. It was the beginning of a great day.
We arrived in Labor and Delivery at Crouse Hospital, checked in at the front desk to find all my closest friends, coworkers, waiting for us(I worked as a nurse on labor and delivery for 6 years). It was like a huge birthday party hosted by my Obstetrician(Dr Ryu) and he was dropping off the biggest gift of all.
I will never forget that feeling I experienced once those babies where placed in my arms in the recovery room that beautiful morning. All the feelings of fear, stress, anxiety, sadness, hurt, and anger that built up over the 3 years prior while we struggled with the challenges we faced with infertility where washed away in a tidal wave of tears. At one time it was so difficult to imagine this moment as it seemed it may never happen and all of the sudden here it was, here they where. Our beautiful babies.
Dr Kiltz created a miracle for us that day. He creates miracles for so many people. Thank you for a day I will never forget. Every time I read your daily intentions I bring myself back to that day and remind myself of the reason I was put on this earth…to be a great mom. When becoming a mom seemed so impossible, too much of a challenge for me to handle, you and your wonderful staff where there to show me the way.
Here is a picture of my children and I on our first family vacation…one of so many future memories just waiting to happen. Thank you for helping us become a family.
All our Love,

A brother for Madeline
February 26, 2009 by Dr. Rob

I would like to take this moment to thank Dr. Kiltz and everyone at CNY Fertility for helping us to have a second baby. In December 2006, I had a miscarriage at 11 weeks pregnant, never thinking I had any infertility issues. We had no trouble conceiving our daughter and until that miscarriage, I never thought something could be so painful. We tried for a few months after that and had no success, so I called CNYFertility and made an appointment. After a few months of medications and insemination and no cause as to why I wasn’t conceiving, we decided to pursue a laparoscopy. Dr. Kiltz found that my ovaries were basically sealed with endometriosis. So, low and behold after the laparoscopy in November 2007, I conceived our son in February 2008. It was a long and painful journey, but I am eternally grateful and I can say it was all worth it. After a healthy pregnancy, I delivered Gavin Clayton on October 30, 2008. Without Dr. Kiltz and CNYFertility, we would have never had this wonderful opportunity to have a son and a brother for our daughter Madeline. We are all thrilled-thank you! You have given us a gift that we cannot thank you enough for!

A self-esteem exercise
February 26, 2009 by Editor

Our primary relationship in life is with our selves. No one else goes through every experience in life with us. We are our one permanent companion, yet we are often our worst critic. To remind ourselves of our magnificence, we can do this exercise: “Five Things I Like About Myself.”
Begin by writing down at least five things that you like about yourself. This is not the time to be modest. If you are having trouble coming up with a total of five items, you know that this exercise can really benefit you. Be sure to include more than your physical attributes on your list, since our bodies are only part of who we are. If you are still struggling with what to include on your list, think of what you like about your favorite people, because these traits are probably qualities that you possess too. Another way to complete your list is to think of five things you don’t like about yourself and find something about these traits that you can like. Read more
