- Choosing to Have a Mate or Being Single

The way we choose to love can be as unique as the way we choose to make a living, maintain our health, or entertain ourselves. Some choose to seek out a mate and enter into a partnership with a special individual, while others find immense satisfaction in staying single. There is no right or wrong way to be in your life when it comes to deciding whether or not to be in a relationship, even though society tends to put an emphasis on romantic partnerships. Whether you choose to go through life as part of a romantic relationship or live as a single unit, there are benefits to both. Feel free to be comfortable with whatever choice is right for you. A lesson in dignity

Everyday as I drove through town, I saw a one-legged man going through ash cans for cigarette butts and trash cans outside of fast food restaurants looking for food.  It was only a month before Christmas, starting to get cold (I lived in a town that was over 6,000 ft. altitude) and I could not quit thinking about him.  It was a year where we didn’t have enough money to really have much in the way of presents but I figured what was too little for us would be a lot for someone who had nothing.

So I bought a brush, toothbrush, toothpaste, pack of cigarettes, cans of tuna, just little things that didn’t cost much and then I added a blanket and sweatshirts.  I made a box up like a present and went in search of this man.  I saw him hobble away from the dumpster next to McDonalds. Read more

Fingerlakes Artists’ work on display in the White House

December 31, 2008 by Christine Briel

-I came across the article below in an e-newsletter from Life in the Finger Lakes Magazine. Our very own Holly Knott created the ornament above on the right. Read about where it ended up this past Christmas. Congratulations Holly!!!

Several area artists were selected to decorate ornaments for the White House Christmas Tree by Central New York Representatives to the U.S. House. As Bob Price reported in the December 14 Steuben Courier-Advocate, John R. “Randy” Kuhl Jr. asked Hammondsport artist Bob MaGee to create an ornament for the 29th Congressional District. Congressman James T. Walsh similarly honored Marcellus artist Holly Knott, asking her to represent the State’s 25th District.

A few weeks after accepting the requests, each artist received a spherical plastic ornament in the mail, about six inches in diameter, with instructions from the White House, including deadlines for returning the completed work, the stipulation that the ornament be visible from above and below Read more

Worry, a self created state

December 30, 2008 by Editor

We have all had the experience of worrying about something at some point in our lives. Some of us have a habitual tendency to worry, and all of us have known someone who is a chronic worrier. Worry is an extension of fear and can be a very draining experience. In order for worry to exist, we have to imagine that something bad might happen. What we are worrying about has not happened yet, however, so this bad thing is by definition a fantasy. Understood this way, worry is a self-created state of needless fear. Still, most of us worry. The happiness ripple

December 30, 2008 by Editor

HAPPINESS is infectious and can “ripple” through social groups such as family and friends – but work colleagues are apparently immune to each other’s moods, according to a study published this week.

The effect creates “clusters” of happy and unhappy people, both socially and in geographical terms, said the study, stressing that contentment “is not merely the province of isolated individuals”. But while the mood of neighbours and friends can have more impact on people than that of live-in partners, work colleagues are not affected by a happy person in their midst, said the study in the British Medical Journal.

“Changes in individual happiness can ripple through social networks and generate large- scale structure in the network, giving rise to clusters of happy and unhappy individuals,” said the study’s authors. Read more
