7 pieces of wisdom to share with our youth
November 11, 2008 by TA Smith

1. Beware of taking the easy way out.
When you take the easy classes, the easy projects and the easy professors, you may be cheating yourself in the long run. It may be best to EXPECT and DEMAND the very best of yourself, as the easy road is loaded with failures.
2. Live your life like YOU want it to be lived—not how others want you to live it.
Sometimes its easiest to “follow the crowd”. Do what YOU think is right. You may get criticized a bit, but stand your ground if you feel strong about it. Do not buckle to peer pressure. Rarely has that proven fruitful.
3. Here are 3 things in which THANKS are due:
An invitation.
A gift.
A warning.
If someone thinks enough of you to invite you to something, a response is only courteous. Its always a good habit to write out thank you notes after gifts and birthday/holiday presents. If someone is kind enough to share a warning with you, also a good time to issue a thank you note.
4. Nothing lowers the conversation level more than … raising the voice.
That’s for you to ponder over for a minute.
5. If you can’t change the circumstances, then change the way you respond to them.
Sometimes in life, we don t have total control over what happens. We do however have 100% control over HOW WE REACT to what happens. Never forget that.
6. When you come to the end of your rope … Tie a knot, and HANG ON!
The message here is stick around a bit longer. Life can be tough, but be steadfast to hang in there 5-10 times longer than you think you can. You’ll amaze yourself, and in the process, watch what you accomplish. You are built much tougher than you can imagine. Far too many people quit too easily.
7. Remember this sage wisdom … Recognize that every OAK TREE started out as a couple of “NUTS”, who stood their ground.
This statement summarizes much of what was said above. Everything starts small before it can become large. To become big and mighty, you have to be tough and withstand much adversity. You may not always be popular with the crowd, nonetheless, that doesn’t mean your not on the right path. Hang tough, and press on.
