On a new path

September 25, 2008 by Randall J Skates

I just finished a book written by Timothy Ferriss, “The Four Hour Work Week”. If you haven’t read it yet I encourage you to do so. The last chapter is so profound I wanted to share it with everyone here. It consists of 2 parts that are very short but relay a powerful message. I will post the first part this week and the second part next week. The first part consists of some thoughts shared by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and the second part is from a terminally ill young girl in a hospital right here in New York.

The Last Chapter:

“There is nothing the busy man is less busied with than living; there is nothing harder to learn” -Seneca

“For the past 33 years I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something … almost everything - all external expectations, all pride all, fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.”

-Steve Jobs, College Dropout and CEO of Apple Computer,
Stanford University Commencement, 2005

Fear is a path to the dark side. Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose. (paraphrased Yoda from Revenge of the Sith)

    There’s no love in fear.
Fear is love’s opposite and therefore it’s anathema.
Love your fear and it turns into courage.
Courage is the Universe’s “how” in the quest for strength and growth.
The seed fears becoming the sprout.
It loves the thought of pushing toward the sky.
The Universe gives the Water and dirt that give it courage.
The sprout fears becoming the plant.
It loves the thought of its’ leaves in the breeze.
The Universe brings Summer’s Warmth and light to give it courage and strength.
The plant fears returning to seed.
It Loves the thought of propagating itself in all the land.
The Universe gives it The bees touching its’ stamen and pistols to instill it with courage,
strength and fortitude to survive until next spring.

    Love your fears.
Fore they are the means by which the Universe is able to instill strength, courage and fortitude to fulfil our individual purpose. Be you plant or animal, Human or insect.
