Smoking cessation and acupuncture

August 20, 2008 by Donald Clarke

Acupuncture has been found to greatly decrease the cravings associated with smoking. Thin needles are inserted into acupuncture points around the ear. The feeling is that the effects of needles quiet the nervous system to the point on not wanting to smoke. In New York State a governing body know as OASIS “ Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services” has been created to offer and oversee acupuncture services to drug addicted individuals. Smoking is considered an addictive substance and can be treated through acupuncture with great success. If you are considering starting a family you must quit smoking.

Both direct cigarette smoke and second hand smoke can add to infertility. Nicotine can cause lower levels of oestgrogens, delay conception, lower sperm counts and increase the risks of miscarriage. Treatment plans range between 2-8 weeks. For women trying to conceive, quitting is encouraged before conception.

Donald, excellent post! I’m amazed at the number of people that are smoking ( just a bit!) and trying to conceive. I see it mostly with the men and it’s so apparent from their sperm assay that something is going on. The impact of all toxins (including smoking) on the sperm must be more emphasized by doctors and acupuncturists working in infertility.
