MindBodySmile challenge – “Turn it off for the day”

» Posted by Editor on Jul 29, 2008 in 0-mind, Uncategorized | 4 comments

Last week one of our contributors, Judith Geiger, posted an article on having to do with cell phones and how using them can disturb events, moments, celebrations in life. She asked the question “Who among us can turn off our cell phones for 24 hours?”

Well Judith received such great feedback via e-mail and comments (view the comments here) on the article that we decided to make it an “Official MindBodySmile.com Challenge”. So … who wants to take part? Here’s the challenge, next Sunday, August 3rd, 2008 turn off your cell phone for the entire day – 24 hours. Now Sunday shouldn’t be too bad right, it’s not a weekday, should be for family, friends, relaxation.

Just think back a few years to when there were no cell phones. Remember what it was like to take a ride, go for a walk, have a family picnic and know that if you weren’t home you wouldn’t hear the phone ring. You were “unavailable” and “unreachable” when you were away from your house phone. You were just spending your time doing the activity of the day with no cell phone interruptions.

Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Let’s all turn off our cell phones for the entire day on this upcoming Sunday, August 3rd. Then after spending this glorious day without the cell phone come back to this MindBodySmile.com article – it will remain on the home page – and leave a comment (or two, or three) describing your “day when you turned it off”. Was it hard for you to go the whole day? Did you thoroughly enjoy it once you got used to being without it? Did you reluctantly turn it back on at the end of the day? Will you do this again another day, maybe the following Sunday? We want to hear all about it … Let’s share our stories and encourage one another to “Turn it off for the day”.

  1. I have a Twitter.com account and a lady I know just posted a comment that seems appropriate to share here:

-”Back from weekend away with the husband. Turned off cell phone for 24 hours. Never felt better.”

Hope you are all thinking about “turning it off” this Sunday :)

  2. I took Judith’s challenge yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it! The only thing I missed was having my friend’s phone numbers. We were in another town and wanted to check in with some friends, and we didn’t have anyone’s numbers, so we drove around popping in on people, which I don’t neccessarily like to do. Once or twice I wanted to check the time, also, and without my cell, I couldn’t. But then I realized it wasn’t really all that important to know the time! I was surprised to find 5 voicemail messages waiting for me this morning when I turned the phone back on!

  3. Hi Everyone,
Today is Friday and I am getting ready to turn off my cell phone this Sunday! Who else is going to give it a try?
I was recently talking with a business man who said it would not be possible for him to turn off his phone for even an hour. He needed to be available 24/7 and his phone rang 4 times just in the short time we were talking.
Don’t forget the amount of stress that is placed on anyone being available 24/7. What support system do you need to put in place so you can join us this Sunday for a complete day of no cell phone. One warning: You may grow to love the quiet!
Let’s hear from everyone who DARES to give it a try!
    Coach Judith

    • I am SO in for this Sunday! And I don’t plan on turning mine back on until Monday morning! YIKES!!
