Being green in small ways everyday Part 1
July 23, 2008 by Matt Wolf
Although climate change may appear to be a problem best tackled by government and industry, there are many things that individuals and families can do around the house to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Everyone knows about the virtues of hybrids and energy efficient appliances, however being green is not only an exercise for those with extra money to spend. Follow these simple, relatively cost effective tips and become more environmentally conscious.
1. Use fluorescent light bulbs. Fluorescent light bulbs are much more efficient than incandescent, and they last longer too.
2. Insulate your home. Although insulating your walls may require an initial investment on your part, you will save around 25% on your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint.
3. Unplug appliances when not in use. Even when you are not using appliances, they still consume energy if they are plugged in. Unplugging them will help you save on your energy bill once again.
4. Reduce time in shower and overall water use. If you can reduce your shower time by a small amount of time (say, five minutes) you can reduce the amount of water you use and your carbon dioxide emissions. Baths take even more energy and water than showers, so stick to showers as much as you can.
5. Reduce use of bottled beverages and paper cups. Not only does the plastic from bottles contaminate the environment, the manufacturing of bottles takes energy and carbon dioxide is emitted. Instead of using paper cups when drinking beverages such as coffee, use you own cups and mugs. Also try making your own beverages at home.
6. Dry your clothing on a clothesline. Dryers can consume a lot of energy over time. In the spring and summer, attempt to line-dry your clothing.
7. Defrost your fridge and freezer regularly. By doing so, you make sure that your fridge is operating efficiently and using less energy. Newer models often have automatic defrost cycles.
8. Adjust your thermostat. If you adjust your thermostat to turn the temperature up in the summer and down in the winter by marginal amounts, you can save on energy and become more efficient.
9. Clean air conditioner filter. If you use an air conditioner in the summer, make sure to clean the filter and you will reduce your carbon footprint.
