Getting our hands into the very earth that sustains us is an action many people simply avoid. However sinking ones hands into warm earth can yield its own reward. When planting our 40 plus varieties of heirloom tomatoes “hand planting” is the best method. Hand planting allows that each and every tomato plant gets some individual attention including a quick inspection of the stem and leaves while moving rich organic material over the tender roots. The repetitive nature of this task, when planting some 2000 plants, begins to get a little robotic so much in fact that the perpetual stream of sweat dripping from your brow no longer is of consequence. Needless to say it is a slow process requiring liberal hand watering and continuous personal hydration.
The truly satisfying aspect of this labor of dedication is when the daily objective is met and you are able to quietly gaze at the day’s accomplishment and at the row after row of young healthy vibrant heirloom tomatoes. During this moment of quiet reflection you look down at the young plants and see a perfect hand print in the warm earth. It is your handprint, a perfect impression of the planter at the base of an heirloom, an artist’s hand working the canvas of Mother Earth. It was a good day of planting; it was a great day to get your hands dirty, a satisfied smile spreads across your face as you finally wipe your brow.
